The Edge of a Volcano

Great relaxing first day of vacation!  Breakfast in our room with this amazing view. Some planning and then explored the little town of Oia (pronounced EE-ah), which consisted of a long narrow walking street paved in marble on the top of the cliff. Great shops and restaurants. Great pics to be had everywhere!  Watching the sunset is a daily event here and we participated tonight. There is a special location on the ruins of a castle where where we witnessed the event (kind of like Key West, without the naked people). The windmills were of interest tonight. We could have stayed in one but would not have had pool or hot tub. We proceeded to have a great dinner at the restaurant Pelicanos, and ended the evening in our heated pool.

Some interesting facts about Santorini:  It is one of the more prominent Greek islands located about 120 miles southeast of Athens in the Aegean Sea, although it is only 28 square miles in size. It is the southernmost member of the Cyclades island group. Roughly 15,000 permanent residents. The most unique aspect of this island, however, is that it blew up in 1600BC at the height of the Minoan civilization. It was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history which killed all inhabitants on the island. To put it in perspective, the eruption was equivalent to 40 Hiroshima bombs!  It totally blew the shit out of this place.  Today, the island of Santorini is the above-water rim of that massive volcano, still technically active. The bay in the middle is formally called The Caldera, and it is literally the caldera of the volcano.  One of the more compelling explanation’s for Plato’s fabled Atlantis is that it existed here.  Easy to say it sank into the sea when you look across a 3-mile wide crater.  Yet, if true, it blew up with little trace.
