West Palm Beach

Image
Discovered a whole new area this afternoon - West Palm Beach.  We of course have the iconic “Palm” promontory and, on the west side, there is this beach. It has high end bars and restaurants, along with its own boardwalk. Today, we had Prosecco and early dinner at Sān Beach. People watching at its best!  It had a South Beach vibe with lots of scantily clad model-like people showing their trendy beachwear and expensive Gucci bags. Seriously, we expected the Real Housewives of Dubai to show up!  We also had a DJ on the beach who took turns with the live entertainment (which was pretty good). The food was amazing! Below is a aerial photo of “The Palm” with West Beach and our apartment building highlighted Note:  No substandard Canadian lobsters here! The models left before the pic. These are not models . . . The best olives I have ever tasted . . .  Showtime for the meat!

Meanwhile, back on Tatooine . . .

Last night’s sunset over the Dubai desert.  Julie had a work event involving a desert safari . . . .  Falconry is a big deal here and the bird is a symbol of the country much like the bald eagle is in the US.  Henna tattoo . . . Nothing screams corporate event more than group tats! An errant bedouin wandered into camp and tried on Julie’s sunglasses Leftover camel meat!  I finally got to taste this delicacy. Yummy, but not much different than beef.

Next . . . Muscat, Oman

Day at the Bazaar

Image
Back in Dubai now but sharing some final pics of our Cairo trip.  Spent our last day exploring the Khan al-Khalili bazaar.  Definitely our least favorite day. Very big, very dirty, and we got lost several times (not to mention the unpleasant haggling with the vendors who are constantly trying to rip you off). Cairo traffic was quite the experience. There are no rules. Drivers have to be ultra aggressive to get anywhere. Several times, we were in an Uber that was part of a 3-car wide u-turn. The cars are also always inches apart (shown below from my car window) Tried to capture some pretty architecture but there wasn’t much pretty to this day Typical street views. Apparently, central AC still isn’t much of a thing here.  Thankfully, Dubai is now the hub of business in the Middle East. Pretty sure we would not have been happy living here.  Caught a glimpse of the Suez Canal on our flight home Crankin’ some Mama Kin flying over Saudi

Day in the Museum!

Image
This was everything you think of when you think of an old  museum - dust everywhere, unopened crates in the corners, stone monuments to the ceiling.  Today, we visited the Egyptian Museum.  All of the artifacts you’ve seen in the history books are here, including King Tut’s treasures . . . . incredible!  Finished the afternoon with some Prosecco overlooking the Nile at the Ritz Carlton. The rear & side view of King Tutankhamen’s funerary mask (the front is shown above).  King Tut was a relatively insignificant figure in Egyptian history. However, his tomb was discovered in 1922 untouched with all contents intact.  One of the only pharaonic tombs that could be 100% authentic and on display.  Back view Side View The King Tut sarcophagus  The front of the Egyptian Museum Sarcophagi . . .  Prior to Aerosmith, Steven Tyler modeled for the ancient Egyptians.
