Exploring the Palm

Image
Had a great relaxing weekend exploring “The Palm” (yes, that one) and trying out some new restaurants. Here we are sitting at Signor Sassy’s, an upscale Italian place with some unique drinks. Below, you can see an image printed on dissolving rice paper. The Palm Tower, next to our restaurant. It has an observation deck on top, along with the highest infinity pool in the world on the 53rd floor Not on the palm but a cool sunset pic near our apartment Another great restaurant - Lucky Fish. This one was also Italian although more eclectic mediteranean. The waiter thought he was impressing me by showing me a live “Canadian” lobster. I told him I’m from where the real lobsters are from and I only eat the ones from Maine!  An interesting occurrance with bankrupt American store brands like Toys R Us or Borders Books. These are not the same companies (which no longer exist). Since the name itself had value, it was sold off for use elsewhere in the world.  Below are some aerial views o...

Back in Dubai

Image
Back in Dubai now for the past 10 days. Many new adventures await, including a trip around southeast Asia in the months ahead. Above is a pic of our apartment building. We are on the 30th floor, 4 balconies down from the top on the righthand side.  It’s still incredibly hot here as my screenshot below indicates. That is the temperature in the shade!  Temps in the sun can go well into the 120’s View of the Dubai Marina (other side from where we live) Most of the beer and wine here is fairly generic and quite expensive. For example, a Kendall Jackson Chardonnay which costs $12 in a US grocery store, costs the equivalent of $29 here. However, I’m occasionally surprised. Just tried an Argentinian beer which was quite tasty. (They gave me a six pack for free when I bought a ton of KJ Chardonnay . . . Go figure!) Below is a view of our parking garage in the basement of the building. No, the black Ferrari is not ours, unfortunately. Our designated spots are to the left and empty as w...

How We Spent Our Summer

Image
Hard to believe our summer in Maine is over. A lot of great times with family and friends, along with phenomenal weather and tasty food & drink. Above is my 4th of July fashion statement, sporting an Arabian Keffiya. The pattern on the headdress typically denotes tribal or regional affiliations.  Mine, with the American flag motif, designates my tribe.  Kicked off the summer with our great friends Rick and Michelle. A little boating in Portland harbor followed by some refreshments at The Porthole Below is our local whiskey bar “Neat” with its extensive selection of brown liquor and bartender Emily The lower patio early in the season after some extensive planting View from “The Lobster Wharf” with the standard meal Our neighbors up the river. Seal Rock sometimes boasts well over 100 of them Fathers’ Day weekend The Eastwind is a local schooner built in Maine and used for tourist excursions  Brunch at Harborside 1901, one of our favorite restaurants.  Lobster Blood...
