More Sights . . .

Image
Another day of Dubai sightseeing. Started out with a quick visit at the Mall of the Emirates for some shopping and viewing of the famous Ski Dubai indoor ski slope (below). Above is a scale model of the future Dubai Creek Tower which, when completed later this decade, will boast a height of roughly 1400 meters, over 500 meters taller than the Burj Khalifa. They have already started the foundation of this structure which is estimated to cost $3.67B. It is debatable whether it will be classified as the world’s tallest “building” as it will not be free-standing. However, it will become the world’s tallest manmade structure. Onward to the Miracle Garden. Gautier is holding a falcon, national bird of the UAE. Falconry is a national passtime of the local royalty.  The umbrella pavilion The Butterfly Pavilion  Views from the Dubai Frame . . .  Museum of the Future . . . . 3D image of a Maine lobster Views from the observation deck Finished the day down at Jumeirah Beach for dinn...

Weekend Brunch & Sightseeing

Image
My Belgian cousin Gautier and his girlfriend Maaike arrived this weekend. We started with brunch at our favorite beach bar Claw BBQ and went on to other major attractions.  Below is our local nightclub Bla Bla with the Ain Dubai visible in the background. We didn’t go here this weekend but a cool pic nevertheless. If you look closely, you can see the skeleton scaling the wall. (We had a good laugh on who that might be!) Burj Khalifa as seen from our abra boat ride The colonel is very popular here at the Dubai Mall! Dubai Aquarium  More iconic tourist pics The Burj at dusk . . . . Dinner overlooking the Dubai Fountain at our Lebanese restaurant Abd El Wahab. You can see the outdoor balcony where we ate on the second floor

New Dubai Venues

Image
Checked out a couple new places this weekend.  This afternoon we had “linner” at Wane (not sure how they pronounce that!). Cool pool bar/restaurant area at a nearby hotel. After living an easy walk from this place, we finally learned of its existence and tried it out. Quite the vibe!  The photo above is a saber toothed tiger sculpture that skirts their pool. They also had a live singer with saxophone accompaniment. Well, Julie is exploring beer and our very sad first round arrived this afternoon. Mine was on the right :( Friday night, we tried a new restaurant . . . February 30th.  Not overly impressed unfortunately. More of a bar on the beach with crappy music, service and food.  We’ll be back next February 30th!  Ha Ha!  Some interesting pics though . . . .

Oktoberfest

Image
Big Oktoberfest event last night with a bunch of our friends.  Great time with German music, food, and of course beer! Smoking salmon, the old fashioned way . . .  Huge surprise!  Didn’t think I’d get to eat bacon until we returned to the US in December. Certainly didn’t expect to see a whole pig roasting on a spit. Also got to sample some pork sausage, bacon potato salad, and the alternative for the health conscious . . . pork knuckle.
