The Golden Man and more sights

Started the day at the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan and walked over to Republic Square where the independence statue is located, commemorating independence from the USSR in 1991.  The statue of “The Golden Man” sits atop a 91 foot high obelisk and is a national symbol of the Kazakhs. In 1969, a 2300yr old tomb was unearthed to reveal the body of, what is thought to be, a prince covered in gold. The statue stands alongside a leaping leopard.

More historic statues . . . .

Presidential Palace. Very Soviet, although they did remove the hammer & sickle from the facade

The apple is the symbol of Almaty, a name that derives from a local word for apple.  It is thought that apples originated from this area of the world
