First Day in the Masai Mara

Started our day leaving camp at pre-dawn, capturing an amazing sunrise. We caught the usual animals but found out from the park rangers that a cheetah mother and cubs were nearby (photo below).  The photo above is that of a female leopard they have named Akira, not to be confused with her sister Shakira Shakira .  People come to Africa with the goal of seeing “The Big Five” animals, which historically were the most difficult to hunt.  These include:  Lions, Elephants, Cape Buffalo, Rhinos, and Leopards.  Today we spotted our #5, completing our Safari goal!  Our masterful guide Dickson had spotted an elk leg in a tree earlier in the day, apparently a snack being saved for later.  We returned later to find the leopard retrieving the snack!

Moving on some other sights of the day . . . .

A young male lion

This was actually a yawn caught on camera. At no time were we in danger!  He was actually a bit bored with us and really could care less about our presence.

Hyena

Topi - part of the elk family. Nicknamed “Blue Jeans” due to its denim colored rear legs.

A rare shot of a cougar standing next to our Land Criiser!

Masai Giraffe - there are 3 kinds here in Kenya - Masai, Reticulated (from the north in Solio), and Rothschild (from Nairobi/Giraffe Manor)
