Last Day on the Mara
Our last full day on the Masai Mara. A lot of lions this morning! What an incredible experience this whole trip has been. We agreed that we need to come back and explore Africa much further.
Today was lion day. We saw two separate prides. The male pictured above has been named Nyekundu, which means “red-colored” in Swahili. He has the infamous reputation of taking out a beloved elderly leopard named Fig (apparently in front of a bunch of onlooking tourists who passed on dinner that night!).
Jackal. It’s basically a small wild dog that makes high pitched barking sounds to communicate. They follow the lions around and eat the scraps of what they kill.
Lioness yawning. Shortly after this photo was taken, she walked straight toward our Land Cruiser and walked alongside us. We could have literally reached out and pet it!
Mother and cub
Three cubs hanging out
Mother lioness and her cub enjoying their wildebeest breakfast. This was a fresh kill from the night before and very interesting to watch them in action
Banded Mongoose
Hippos playing in the river in back of our tent. I took this photo from our deck! They make grunting snorting noises all night but we have grown to love the sounds.
Baby Hyenas

When your happy meal comes with a toy! Nothing like wildebeest tail for some post breakfast play
