Mara Plains Camp

For those wondering about our accommodations, here are some images of our “tent.”  Technically, it is indeed a tent. It has canvas/screen walls and ceiling.  However, it has a floor, bathroom, plumbing, and structure that the lighter material attaches itself to.  We are “glamping”

It is very safe here.  However, they provide security escorts after dark due to all of the wild animals.

The tent platform sits on a hillside over a small river, home to several hippos who snort and grunt at all hours of the night.  Baboons sleep in the trees over our tent and all seem to jump off our “roof” at dawn.  We eat gourmet food and even dined with the owners Derek and Beverly Joubert last night.  They are National Geographic photographers/videographers, incredibly interesting people.  This has been an experience of a lifetime and one of our best trips ever.

A unique perk to this camp is that every “tent” has a high-end camera for each guest to use. These come equipped with a 100-400mm lens, capable of getting awesome close up shots that we have been posting.

Our morning game drive today focused on hippos.  Julie captured video of one of these massive creatures running (below).  They weigh around 2.5 to 3 tons.  Despite their cuteness, they are an aggressive vicious animal, responsible for over 500 deaths in Africa every year.  They spend most of their time sitting on the water with just their eyes and ears visible, not very photogenic.

Eland  (largest of the local elk species)

This is a DikDik.  What a clever name!  Again, elk family but this is the smallest - not much bigger than a house cat
