Exploring the Palm
Had a great relaxing weekend exploring “The Palm” (yes, that one) and trying out some new restaurants. Here we are sitting at Signor Sassy’s, an upscale Italian place with some unique drinks. Below, you can see an image printed on dissolving rice paper.
The Palm Tower, next to our restaurant. It has an observation deck on top, along with the highest infinity pool in the world on the 53rd floor
Another great restaurant - Lucky Fish. This one was also Italian although more eclectic mediteranean. The waiter thought he was impressing me by showing me a live “Canadian” lobster. I told him I’m from where the real lobsters are from and I only eat the ones from Maine!
Not on the palm but a cool sunset pic near our apartment
An interesting occurrance with bankrupt American store brands like Toys R Us or Borders Books. These are not the same companies (which no longer exist). Since the name itself had value, it was sold off for use elsewhere in the world.
Below are some aerial views of the Palm Jumeirah (meaning “beautiful” palm in Arabic) or what we simply call “The Palm”
This thing didn’t even exist 20 years ago! Construction started in 2001 and completed around 2009. Precision GPS technology was used to get the shape right. It is one of the largest land reclamation projects in history and is roughly the size of downtown Boston, 3.4 miles from base to outer crescent. It currently boasts over 25,000 residents, some famous and some quite infamous. It is considered one of the most expensive real estate areas of Dubai. One villa alone sold in 2022 for over $160M.
That place looks very cool Greg. I can't imagine it would fair very well here in the states. First hurricane to hit it would wipe it out.
ReplyDeleteNo EPA. But no worries for hurricanes either
DeleteYes, no regulation but they still have some high building standards. That Palm isn’t just sand. There is a shit-ton of rock underneath. It’s going to be around for a while!
