Türkiye Revisited
Another Julie work trip and a solo tourist excursion on my part. Spent the day revisiting some sights from our trip 2 years ago. Above is the Blue Mosque taken from Sultanahmet Square. The last time we visited, it was undergoing repairs and there was a lot of scaffolding inside. I was hoping to get some unobstructed photos of the interior but I was tired of waiting in line and a cold beer was calling my name!
Below is the Hagia Sofia mosque, which has alternated from being a church and a mosque several times in its history. This was the one major site I skipped 2 years ago due to the long line. However, I suffered the line this time and got myself inside.
Below is another redo from 2yrs ago - the Basilica Cistern, a vast water storage cavern created by the Holy Roman emperor Justinian in 532AD. I recently bought a new wide angle lens for my camera that is good in low light. Had to give it go and visit this cool place again. Have to say, the photos are definitely better from the last visit. This place was forgotten long ago and was rediscovered in the Middle Ages when it was learned people were pulling water (and even fish) from holes in their basements. This thing holds 22 million gallons of water! Today, you can walk through it on elevated walkways. There are 336 columns supporting its roof which give it an eerie church like feel. Interesting fact: This place was used in a scene from the 1963 James Bond film “From Russia With Love,”as well as the last scene in Dan Brown’s “Inferno.”
