Traveling Jones

We arrived in Athens Sunday afternoon for Julie’s work conference and I’ve been playing solo tourist for the week.  Had a brief walking tour upon arrival and spent all of Monday doing some intensive sightseeing, including a climb up to the top of the Acropolis.  Unfortunately, the iconic Parthenon (shown above) was shrouded in scaffolding. Great sights nevertheless.  I also toured the Agora area, the ancient town center and marketplace of Athens, home to many interesting ruins.  Below, The Erechtheion on top of the Acropolis. The statues are called “The Caryatids” and used to possess arms carrying bowls. Temple of Athena Nike (temple of victory) The Propylaia - basically the grand entrance at the top of the rock. The site of the filming of  the 1974 movie “The Man with the Golden Gun” in Phang Nga Bay, Thailand.  The iconic limestone karst stands 66ft tall (20M) and is officially called Ko Ta Pu. Loosely translated, it means “eye of the crab.” There are over 150 islands in Phang Nga Bay, most are towering karsts like the ones below.  Long boats on the beach at low tide Interesting cave and stalagtite structures near the shores of many islands The car engine that powers the long boats.  Most are 1.9L diesel engines, 8 cylinders.  Interesting rock formation next to James Bond Island. Half of the rock wall slipped downward long ago and now leans against the other side.  Poisonous sea worm we found on the beach.
